People have learned how to strum a guitar, but they don't have the soul. They don't feel
it from the heart. It hurts me. I'm killin' myself to tell them how it is.
I had the one thing you need to be a blues singer, I was born with the blues. So I went ahead
and made me a guitar. I got me a cigar box, I cut me a round hole in the middle of it, take
me a little piece of plank, nailed it onto that cigar box, and I got me some screen wire and I
made me a bridge back there and raised it up high enough that it would sound inside that
little box, and got me a tune out of it. I kept my tune and I played from then on.
Lightnin’ changes chords when Lightnin’ wants to!

I play it from my heart and soul…The blues is something that the people can’t get rid of. And
if you ever have the blues, remember what I tell you. You’re gonna hear this in your heart…
slowly rough and delicately brutal, like stones being rattled in a can of ribbon cane syrup
It's a sin to be rich, but it's a low down shame to be poor.
Well, I don't want no bald headed woman.

Short Haired Woman     Sam ("Lightnin'") Hopkins
https://youtu.be/5mA71kk6Q9I

I don't want no woman
If her hair ain't no longer than mine
I don't want no woman
If her hair ain't no longer than mine

Yes, you know, she ain't no good for nothin' but trouble
That keep you buyin' rats all the time

Yes, you know I care no why to the hairdresser
And this what the hair dresser said
She's a [Incomprehensible]
I can't treat a woman's hair wrong
God knows I can treat her hair, I told her no
If her hair ain't no longer than mine

Yes, you know, she ain't no good for nothin' but trouble
That keep you buyin' rats all the time

Yes, you know I woke up this morning
People, poor Sam, he woke about the break of day
I even found a rat on her pillow where she used to lay

No, I don't want no woman
'Bove her hair no longer than mine
Yeah, you know, she ain't no good for nothin' but trouble
That keep you buyin' rats all the time

Every one of those farms gave Friday and Saturday night dances…All you had to do was to
rap on your guitar and they’d pat and holler. Ol’ sister would shout, ‘You swing mine and
I’ll swing yours!
the so-called ‘monotonic bass’ thumb strike to accompany his songs. With this pattern,
the picking thumb didn’t move between strings, but sets up a solid rhythm on one or
two bass strings

Lonesome in Your Home Lightnin Hopkins
https://youtu.be/EP8y4_3qbQQ

Ain’t it lonesome, ain’t it lonesome, sitting in your home alone
Ain’t it lonesome, ain’t it lonesome, sitting in your home alone
Yes, you know, when your wife done quit your black self and the girl you love is gone

Yeah, you know she kind of like Katie Mae
I give her everything in the world she needs
That’s why she don’t do nothing, man, but lay up in the bed and read

And you know, she’s kind of like Katie Mae
Boy, I give that woman everything in the world she needs
Yes, that’s why, you know, she don’t do nothing, man, lay up in the bed and read

Yes, you know I bought her a radio, I even bought her a’electric fan
She said, “Sam. I’m gon’ lay here and read and God knows I won’t have no other man”
That made me feel so good till I don’t know what to do
Yes, darling, every dollar poor Sam makes, you know, he got to bring it back home to you
(Got to play it out right here)

Still, I say, can’t a woman act funny, I’m talking about when she got another man?
You know she won’t look straight at you, boy, she always raising sand
Can’t a woman act funny, boy, when she got another man
Yes, you know she won’t look straight at you, then she’s always raising sand

Well I wouldn't mind staying in jail, but I've gotta stay there so long
You know it seem like all my friends, you know they done shook hands and gone

Thirty days in jail, with my back turned to the wall
Thirty days in jail, with my back turned to the wall
Yes you know some other skinner must be kickin' in my stall

(Sound like I hear that wolf howlin'...)

Yeah I'm the wolf and everybody in the world,
Trying to find out who I prowl
I'm the wolf and everybody in the world,
They're trying to find out who I hound
Well you know they can't see me at night,
But they can hear me when I howl

(Howl, wolf... I said howl... Now you're howlin'!...)

I take time when I'm prowlin',
Wipe my tracks out with my tail
(A lot of people wonder why I do this but I wanna tell you)
I take time when I come prowlin',

Wipe my tracks out with my tail
That's in order that no one discover,
Whoa Lord he can't cross my trail

I'm that wolf, dig a hole,
Stick my nose down in the ground (hound)
I'm that wolf, dig a hole,
Stick my nose deep down in the ground
Yeah you know I'll be hiding right at you baby,
You'll think I'm way out on the outskirts of town

(That's that wolf)
